Mentoring is a more prescriptive process than coaching and often the two practices are used together. Mentoring involves the use of the mentors’ knowledge and experience and often their network of contacts and associates to open doors and provide for business development opportunities.

Mentoring may involve one to one support in learning new techniques, processes or philosophies. It may also involve hands on work from the mentor to help the client implement a major business project or change programme. Externally sourced mentoring support often provides a focus for positive change and development in a way that cannot be achieved through internal interactions with work colleagues.

It is well known that it is easier to fix other people’s problems than it is to fix your own. As a consequence, and also in the absence of internal organisational politics, coaches and mentors have the freedom and focus to support business leaders to achieve exceptional transformational change. We all need a coach and mentor.

Some points of wisdom
  1. Engage in regular reflection on performance.
  2. Concentrate on current problems and barriers.
  3. Develop a positive transformational vision.
  4. Admit errors and encourage an open, honest and non-judgemental work community.
  5. Cascade Mentoring throughout the organisation.
